Each year, DesignIntelligence honors excellence in education and education administration by naming 25 exemplary professionals.

The 2012 class of education role models was selected by DesignIntelligence staff with extensive input from thousands of design professionals, academic department heads, and students. Educators and administrators from the disciplines of architecture, industrial design, interior design, and landscape architecture are considered for inclusion.

Rod Barnett

Associate Professor and Chair, Graduate Program in Landscape Architecture, School of Architecture
Auburn University

Barnett has extensive experience in the development of landscape architecture degree programs and curricula, having taught design studio at all levels, as well as history and cultural landscape courses and seminars. He believes that landscape architecture education should encourage innovative design thinking and that it is the responsibility of landscape designers to continuously re-make the world in response to the challenges of contemporary life.

Reneé Cheng

Professor and Head of School, School of Architecture, College of Design
University of Minnesota

A registered architect, Cheng’s professional experience includes work for Pei, Cobb, Freed and Partners and Richard Meier and Partners before founding Cheng-Olson Design. She has been recognized for teaching excellence with numerous teaching awards. Her research involves documenting case studies of buildings that integrate design with emerging technologies. She is interested in ways that design ideas are mediated as they become built reality.

Karen Clarke

Co-Program Director and Associate Professor of Interior Design
New England School of Art & Design at Suffolk University

Clarke has taught at Suffolk University for 15 years. She is currently also the sole proprietor of an interior design firm that specializes in residential and commercial interiors. Prior to her position at Suffolk, Clarke taught at Mount Ida College, Newbury College, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Vancouver Community College. She earned a B.A.A. in interior design at Ryerson University and an M.F.A. at Boston University.

James Corner

Professor and Department Chair, Landscape Architecture
University of Pennsylvania

Corner teaches design studios and courses in media and theory. He is also principal of James Corner Field Operations, an international landscape architectural and urban design practice based in New York City. His award-winning design projects include the High Line in New York City and Fresh Kills Park in Staten Island. In 1996, he was the first holder of the Jens Jensen Professorship in Landscape and Urbanism at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Robert Dunay

Director, Center for Design Research, and T.A. Carter Professor of Architecture, School of Architecture & Design
Virginia Polytechnic institute and State University

Dunay has taught at all levels of Virginia Tech’s graduate and undergraduate programs. His work bridges interests in industrial design, architecture, and planning and includes objects, buildings, and planning initiatives. Dunay was one of the primary faculty advisors for the 2002 and 2005 Virginia Tech entries in the Solar Decathlon. He was recently awarded the NCARB Prize for creative collaborative between the academy and the profession.

Thomas Fisher

Professor and Dean, College of Design
University of Minnesota

Educated at Cornell University in architecture and Case Western Reserve University in intellectual history, Fisher previously served as regional preservation officer for Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, historical architect of the Connecticut State Historical Commission in Hartford, and editorial director of Progressive Architecture magazine in Stamford, Conn. He has lectured or juried at more than 40 schools of architecture and 60 professional societies.

Thomas Fowler

Professor and Assistant Department Head, Architecture Department
California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Fowler’s teaching responsibilities include third-year design and building technology courses. He also directs the computer laboratory he started in 1997 — the Collaborative Integrative Digital-Design Studio — which gives students access to the latest digital technology. Fowler has received a number of awards in recognition of his teaching and research. His practice experience includes working for Davis Brody Architects in New York City and Harman Cox in Washington, D.C.

Hope Hasbrouck

Graduate Advisor and Assistant Professor, Landscape Architecture, School of Architecture
University of Texas at Austin

Hasbrouck teaches graduate-level design studios and lecture courses in landscape architecture. Her teaching spans from the core curriculum to advanced seminars and design studios. Her work outside the studio is a multifaceted exploration of landscape representation. She received the Garden Club of America Rome Prize in Landscape Architecture in 2008. Prior to joining UT, Hasbrouck was a member of the faculty of design at Harvard University.

Rodney Hill

Professor, College of Architecture
Texas A&M University

Hill’s interests include social and behavioral factors in architecture, creativity, and future studies. He is an award-winning architect and an expert in environmental psychology. Hill joined the Texas A&M faculty in 1969 and developed one of the most popular courses there — Environmental Design 101. He has been honored with a number of teaching awards, including being named a Piper Professor by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation in May.

David Hulse

Professor, Department of Landscape Architecture
University of Oregon

Hulse is a founding member of the University’s Institute for a Sustainable Environment. His expertise is in the area of geographic information systems and the use of computer-based tools for facilitating land and water use planning and natural resource decision-making. He has worked as a landscape planner domestically and abroad and received the U.S. Chapter of the International Association for Landscape Ecology’s Distinguished Landscape Practitioner Award.

Margo Jones

Professor and Interior Design Internship Coordinator, School of Building Arts
Savannah College of Art and Design

Jones joined SCAD in 2002, bringing with her 25 years’ experience of design work with special expertise in strategic planning, programming, and workplace analysis. She takes particular interest in mentoring and assists students and recent graduates in securing internships and full-time positions in design firms, architectural firms, and Fortune 100 companies. Jones is a fellow if the International Interior Design Association and a LEED accredited professional.

Judith Kinnard

Harvey-Wadsworth Chair of Landscape Urbanism and Professor of Architecture, School of Architecture
Tulane University

Kinnard’s commitment to architectural education spans 28 years, having taught at Syracuse University, Princeton University, and the University of Virginia. In her studio teaching, she focuses on institutional programs and their creative engagement of physical and cultural context. Her current research and teaching also involves the development of innovative approaches to low-rise/high-density housing for American cities. She maintains an active practice.

Mark Linder

Associate Professor, School of Architecture
Syracuse University

Linder teaches theory and design, and his research focuses on transdisciplinary exchanges between art and architecture. Linder has lectured through the United States and Europe. He was recently the Max Fisher visiting professor at the University of Michigan and has taught as a visitor at Harvard University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Rice University, the Illinois Institute of Technology, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the University of California, Los Angeles.

Margaret Livingston

Professor, School of Landscape Architecture and Planning, College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture
University of Arizona

Livingston teaches courses related to ecological and environmental issues in arid environments and leads workshops focused on water conservation, wildlife habitat, and the use of native plants in urban areas. As an urban ecologist, her work emphasizes the importance of evaluating and maintaining natural and semi-natural ecosystems in and around urban areas. As a designer, she focuses on the use of native plants and design of urban wildlife spaces.

Elizabeth Meyer

Associate Professor, Landscape Architecture, School of Architecture
University of Virginia

Meyer is one of the leading landscape architectural theorists in the United States. She has lectured at universities on four continents and published widely on topics of contemporary landscape design practice and theory. Her teaching and scholarly interests focus on three areas: the re-discovery and examination of modern landscape theory, the establishment of a robust contemporary practice of landscape criticism, and the idea of design as site interpretation.

Monica Ponce de Leon

Dean and Eliel Saarinen Collegiate Professor of Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning
University of Michigan

Prior to her 2008 appointment at Michigan, Ponce de Leon was a professor of architecture, director of the digital lab, and acting architecture program director at Harvard University. She was a founding principal of Office dA and recently launched her own design practice. She received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Miami and a Master of Architecture in Urban Design degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Scott Poole

Dean, College of Architecture and Design
University of Tennessee

Poole began his tenure at Tennessee in July. Previously, he was director of the School of Architecture and Design at Virginia Tech, where he oversaw the architecture and landscape architecture programs. While at Virginia Tech, Poole received the Teaching Excellence Award and the Leonard and Virginia Currie Professional Development Award. He has been recognized by the Association for Collegiate Schools of Architecture for his distinguished service.

Lawrence Speck

W.L. Moody Jr. Centennial Professorship in Architecture and Distinguished Teaching Professor, School of Architecture
University of Texas at Austin

Speck has been on the faculty since 1975, having served as associate dean and dean of the school. He has a distinguished career as a practicing architect, his buildings having garnered 28 design awards. His current research in practice focuses on innovative uses of materials and building products. Speck is a member of the Architectural Advisory Board for the U.S. State Department Office of Overseas Buildings Operations.

Randall Stauffer

Interior Architecture Chair and Professor, School of Architecture
Woodbury University

Stauffer is a designer, educator, and consultant specializing in interior spaces. Before joining Woodbury more than 20 years ago, Stauffer worked for design firms that focused on corporate interiors for the financial and entertainment sectors. In addition to continued consulting, Stauffer presents and researches on the importance of the interior space as a place of political agency and change and its impact on the social relevance to architectural design.

Robert A.M. Stern

Dean and J.M. Hoppin Professor of Architecture, School of Architecture
Yale University

Stern, founder and senior partner in the firm Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York City, is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and received the Medal of Honor in 1984 as well as the New York chapter President’s Award in 2001. His interest and experience in the development of New York City’s architecture and urbanism can be seen in books he has coauthored as well as an eight-part, eight-hour documentary television series aired on PBS.

Peter Trowbridge

Chair and Professor, Department of Landscape Architecture
Cornell University

Trowbridge has been engaged in planning, design, and implementation of landscape architecture for more than 35 years. His innovative professional techniques include the most contemporary green environmental practices and technologies as well as forward-looking implementation strategies. He brings these technologies, practices, and strategies into the classroom, influencing the next generation of teachers and practitioners.

Craig Vogel

Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies, Professor and Director, Center for Design Research and Innovation, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning
University of Cincinnati

Vogel has taught for 20 years at all levels of undergraduate and graduate design education. For the past 25 years, he has also been a consultant to more than 20 companies and advised and managed dozens of research projects and design studios collaborating with industry. He recently co-founded the Live Well Collaborative, a non-profit joint venture between UC and P&G that creates cross-functional teams to design products and services for consumers aged 50-plus.

Charles Waldheim

Professor and Chair, Department of Landscape Architecture
Harvard University

Waldheim teaches design studios at the intersection of landscape and contemporary urbanism, and his research focuses on landscape architecture in relation to contemporary urbanism. He coined the term “landscape urbanism.” Waldheim has lectured on landscape and contemporary urbanism across North America, Europe, and Australasia. In 2006, he received the Rome Prize Fellowship in Landscape Architecture at the American Academy in Rome.

Lisa Kinch Waxman

Professor, Department of Interior Design
Florida State University

With particular interest in technology, the social and psychological aspects of design, and design for special populations, Waxman teaches computer-aided design and social-psychological aspects of design in the graduate program. Among the accolades to her credit is the Graduate Faulty Mentor Award for making significant contributions to the experiences of graduate students. She currently serves as president of the Inter Design Educators Council.

John Weigand

Professor and Chair, Department of Architecture and Interior Design
Miami University

Weigand earned architectural degrees at Miami and at the University of Illinois, and he worked professionally in Chicago from 1980 to 1991 prior to teaching. At Miami, Weigand developed the B.F.A. in interior design (1995) and directed the B.F.A. program until 2006. In 2001, he was awarded the NCARB Prize for creative integration of practice and education in the academy, for his work with collaborative, Internet-based design.
