Solving London's Housing Problem?

There is growing concern among several groups in England that crowding will occur, not to mention a reduction in the quality of life, with the establishment of higher-density housing developments next to existing developments.

There is growing concern among several groups in England that crowding will occur, not to mention a reduction in the quality of life, with the establishment of higher-density housing developments next to existing developments.

In an effort to solve London's housing shortage problem, plans for a new area in Leeds called City East that would house 500,000 people over the next 25 years are being discussed by Britain's leading designers, including the mayor's chief architectural adviser, Lord Richard Rogers.

English Heritage, an agency dedicated to conserving the historic environment, is set to launch a campaign to save England's historic suburbs from the crowding that may occur with the new housing developments.

The difference, however, between this project and those in the past is that the focus of the new developments will be on areas that are already the most developed that have existing or planned transportation infrastructure, rather than on regenerating the entire region.
