Construction should be complete by fourth-quarter 2006.

Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg has been commissioned to design Manitoba Hydro's new $188-million, 22story, 690,000-sf energy-efficient headquarters, which will include public, retail, and commercial space.The building will feature a geothermal heat pump system, a living "green" roof, atriums providing fresh air, a solar chimney, and windows designed to maximize daylight and reduce artificial lighting, all of which are set to achieve the building's energy reduction target of 60 percent.

The MacPhail Center for Music is moving to a new, larger space--a 55,000-sf flagship on the downtown Minneapolis riverfront--to be designed by James Dayton. The $12.5-million, six-story tower of music studios will frame a two-story, 225-seat auditorium and will include such materials as tin, steel, and glass. Improvements to the new space include more auditorium seating, air conditioning and acoustical control, and community spaces where parents can wait for students.
To be located next to the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles is the $1.8billion, 3.8-million sf Grand Avenue redevelopment project, a series of hotels, apartments, restaurants, and retail and entertainment space designed by architect guru Frank O. Klutznick Co. is building CityNorth, a 144-acre, mixed-use community in Phoenix that will incorporate residential, retail, office, dining, entertainment, and lifestyle spaces in a pedestrian-friendly setting. Landscaped open spaces in the development will serve as venues for concerts, art exhibits, and other outdoor cultural events.
URS Corp. and Quinn Evans Architects are collaborating on the $55million expansion of the Yankee Air Force and Yankee Air Museum at the Willow Run Airport in Michigan.The Michigan Aerospace Foundation selected the two firms to create a campus reminiscent of a English World War II airbase, since this is where Henry Ford told the War Department he could turn out an airplane every hour on his assembly line.The old schoolhouse on the property will be converted into an aviation library, and the project is expected to be completed in 2018.
ROMA Design Group had the winning design proposal out of more than 800 entries for the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial in Washington, DC. The $100-million structure will cover four acres and will feature water in the form of individual streams and wellsprings, stones, and trees (oaks, pines, magnolias, and cherries), which will illustrate the themes of justice, democracy, and hope.
